Picquot Ware SB Sugar Bowl with Lid

Burrage and Boyd was a company formed in 1932 which produced Non-Electric Vacuum Cleaners, the main components of which were made from cast aluminium. The company was based in Northampton where they had an aluminium foundry and the success of this venture made the owners look for additional products that could be made with the technology they had, namely casting, machining and finishing.

After considerable market research, they decided to manufacture a range of high-class tableware, starting with a 3-pint kettle made from one casting and fitted with wooden handles. After consulting metallurgists, they found that by adding magnesium to the aluminium, a "silver like" look could be obtained after polishing.

Designed in 1938, the K3 Kettle was ready to be launched at the British Industries Fair in Birmingham in 1939. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the war stopped these plans and the whole factory moved over to ammunition production. In mid 1945, the Ministry of Production allowed development work to begin on non-warwork, in order to prepare for peace.

Jigs and tools were made for the kettle and this was finally released at the B.I.F. in 1946-47 under the trade name "Newmaid". The kettle was well received by consumers and the factory was soon producing over 1000 per week. It was chosen for the "British Can Make It" Exhibition in London in 1951, and later chosen to be exhibited by the Design Centre. It was at this time that for marketing reasons the name was changed to Picquotware. The range was expanded over the proceeding years and a full tea and coffee set is now available.

Picquotware pieces are exclusive, modern designs made from Magnailium. This is an alloy especially developed for Picquot tableware which is polished (not plated) and is cast in one piece to ensure no leaks occur around the spout.

The spouts have been specifically designed for smooth non-drip pouring. The pieces are machined and have milled lid hinges for perfect fit and can be rejuvenated after many years' use. The designs have heat resisted handles made of sycamore wood and the trays have heat resistant wareite centres.

I was not told the item was not in stock, however, once this had been identified Milly's were most helpful. The product I know of old, it is excellent in design and function, worth the expense
